The AutoDBS-2 platform leverages the automation techniques Tomtec has developed over decades and applies that knowledge to fully automate the harvest and transfer of DBS plugs to 96-well assays. The instrument is designed to operate in a full walk-away mode. Bar-coded Tomtec DMPK cards are pre-load in a cassette tower. These cards are then in-feed into the instrument, bar-code scanned, positioned and punched into a 96-well assay. Two cameras with their own software controlled lighting system are used to read and map the blood spot from the front and back of the card. This is done to determine the optimal punch coordinates for extraction. All data is logged for each plug which is extracted and placed into a assay well.
